How to Import Your Steam Inventory into an S&Box Portfolio

Published April 16, 2026 — Last updated April 16, 2026

If you already own S&Box items on Steam, you don't need to type them into a portfolio one by one. S&Box Tracker has a one-click inventory import feature that reads your Steam inventory, lets you confirm which items to include and what you paid for each, then creates a fully populated portfolio in seconds. This guide shows you exactly how to use it.

Before You Start: Make Your Steam Inventory Public

Steam inventories are private by default. To read yours, you need to change two settings:

  1. Open Steam → your profile page → Edit Profile
  2. Click the Privacy Settings tab
  3. Set My profile to Public
  4. Set Inventory to Public
  5. Save your changes

You can switch the settings back to private after importing — the tracker only reads your inventory at import time (and again when you manually refresh), not continuously.

Step 1: Sign In with Steam

Visit sbox-tracker.com/login and click "Sign in through Steam." You'll be redirected to Steam's login page, then back to your dashboard. No password is shared — authentication goes through Steam's OpenID.

Step 2: Open the Import Inventory Dialog

On your dashboard, click the Import Inventory button in the top-right corner. A modal opens and your S&Box items load automatically from Steam. This takes a few seconds the first time; after that, results are cached for 15 minutes.

Only marketableitems appear in the list. If you own S&Box items that are untradeable (e.g., items tied to your account), they're filtered out because you can't buy or sell them on the market anyway.

Step 3: Pick Items and Set Buy Prices

For each item you want to import, check the box on the left. The quantity field is pre-filled with how many copies you own, and the buy price is pre-filled with the current market price — but you should change it to what you actually paidif it's different. The buy price is your cost basis, and it's what unrealized P&L is calculated against.

A few tips:

  • Check the top-left checkbox to select every item at once.
  • Quantity must be at least 1. You can enter less than you own (for example, if you want to track only some of them).
  • Buy price must be greater than 0.If you received the item for free (event drop, gift), enter a token value like 0.01 — or don't import that item and add it manually later with a note.
  • Portfolio nameat the top defaults to "Steam Inventory" but you can change it to anything (e.g., "Main Holdings" or "Long Term").

Step 4: Click Import as Portfolio

Once you've picked your items and confirmed the quantities and prices, click Import as Portfolio. The app creates a new portfolio and logs each selected item as a BUY transaction dated today. You're redirected to the portfolio page where you can see your full holdings, P&L, and charts immediately.

What Happens If I'm at My Portfolio Limit?

The free plan allows up to 3 portfolios, and Premium allows up to 10. If you're already at your limit, the import dialog shows a clear message with two options: delete an existing portfolio to free up a slot, or upgrade to Premium for more. You won't lose your selections — the dialog blocks the import cleanly so you know why it didn't go through.

After the Import: What's Next

Your new portfolio is a fully-functional S&Box Tracker portfolio — it works exactly the same as one you built manually. From here you can:

  • Add more buys or sells directly with the + Transaction button if you keep trading.
  • Edit individual transactions if a buy price was wrong or a date was off.
  • Watch the portfolio value chart fill in over time as our hourly price refresh runs.
  • Set price alerts (Premium) on any item to get notified when it hits a target.
  • Export to CSV (Premium) for tax records or personal analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I re-import later if I buy more items?

The import feature creates a newportfolio each time — it doesn't merge into an existing one. If you buy more items later, add them as individual transactions using the + Transaction button in the portfolio, which is faster than re-importing everything.

Will the tracker know how much I actually paid?

No — Steam doesn't share purchase history with third-party apps. The buy price field defaults to the current market price as a starting point, but you need to enter your actual purchase price manually for the P&L to be accurate. Your Steam Wallet transaction history (Steam Account → Store → View Purchase History) has the exact amounts.

Is my Steam inventory data stored anywhere?

Inventory item names and quantities are cached server-side for 15 minutes per user so the dialog loads instantly on re-open. No prices are cached — prices always come from our live database. You can clear the cache any time by hitting the Refresh button on the Inventory page.

What if my inventory is still private?

You'll see an error saying your inventory is private or empty. Double-check that both "My profile" AND "Inventory" are set to Public in Steam Privacy Settings. Steam sometimes caches privacy settings for a minute or two — if you just changed them, wait a moment and try again.

Can I import only some items and add others manually?

Yes. You can leave items unchecked in the import dialog, then add them later with + Transaction. This is useful for items where you want to log a specific purchase date or note.
